This Little Sofa Goes Home
September 8th, 2008
How will you get your new sofa or sectional sofa shipped to your home? There are several options available, but you should be aware of all policies and costs that may be associated with the shipping and delivery of your sofa or sectional sofa.
1. Standard Delivery
The cheapest option available is picking up your sofa or sectional yourself. However, if you do not have a truck available, the next best thing will be the standard delivery that most retailers and online sites will offer. This method of shipping and delivery involves the company shipping your sofa or sectional by a general freight carrier such as UPS or a specialized furniture freight carrier. This delivery agent will bring the sofa or sectional to your door, but that is the extent of his involvement. You will be responsible for inspecting the sofa for any damage and refusing delivery if necessary. You will have to remove your old furniture, move in the new sofa, and clean up all packaging materials yourself.
2. White Glove Delivery
This option is the easiest on the consumer. Some companies will offer this at no extra charge, but you should look over shipping policies carefully to find out if there is a charge. With white glove delivery, the delivery agent schedules an appointment for a delivery time with you, unlike a standard freight carrier who runs a set route and could be there at times inconvenient to you. The delivery agent is responsible for also inspecting the sofa before delivering it to you, but you should still double-check this yourself. The delivery agent carries the sofa in and does any light assembly and arrangement that may be required. Afterwards, the delivery agent removes all packaging materials and debris for you.
3. Fees
Always pay attention to shipping and delivery fees. Some companies may charge a flat rate for delivery while others offer free delivery within a certain distance of the retail store. There may be extra charges based on the weight of the sofa, the value of the sofa, or the distance they must travel to reach your home. Find out if their delivery is to the door only or if it includes indoor delivery. Even if it's not white glove delivery, it will be more convenient to you if they will bring the sofa inside. Be aware that indoor delivery often does not cover extra effort such as going up or down a stairwell. Basic charges for standard delivery seem to range from $50-$100, but always ask for specific charges.
Shopping for the perfect sofa or sectional doesn't stop with your selection. You must concern yourself with how to get it home without any damage. Whether you are a do-it-yourself type or want the convenience of personal service in your delivery, you can arrange to have your new sofa or sectional shipped to you in a manner that suits your needs.
